A great surprise in Vitoria's north east.

"Tell us about Fez," a friend prompted after we returned from a short sojourn to the north east. Its like a little shopping mecca meets a middle eastern inspired cafe with some very contemporary sensibilities and some old world charm.

It was a bloody hot day, almost too hot to be driving and munching - the weather was very much a day for sipping Prosecco and eating cheese, which we managed to fit in much later on. Myrtleford has grown considerably since my last visit in the very early 90's. It now has a lovely cosmopolitan feel about it, with eating, drinking and shopping very much on the to do list. Fez had been recommended to us and as the other Scoffer loves a shop as much as a sup, who am I to say no?

We decided on a mix and match affair. Jibne, a cheese filled Lebanese bread and Spene, Lebanon's answer to the Greek spanakopita led us off. Delicious, flaky and salty. Mmmmm. We followed with a fatoush salad bowl (cauliflower removed please), kibbeh, kofta and spiced potatoes. The spuds were the only let down - not sure what I was expecting but they were kinda par boiled and a bit dull. Everything else however, was jammed with beautiful spices, deftly handled in the kitchen and very well balanced.

We washed this all down with a Billy Button Prosecco and a Pizzini Pinot Grigio. Both of them very local and perfect to enjoy for lunch. A local rose on the list would have been nice, as this kind of food loves a chilled glass of a sangiovese rose. Apart from that, we couldn't find much fault.

We wandered through the shopping part, which took considerably longer than the lunch, and found ourselves a bargain or two. They stock so much - including some gowns that would not have been out of place in My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding - something unexpected among the second hand goods and imports from SE Asia.

A strange sight among the bounty of goods.

If you are in this part of the world, stop in Myrtleford and treat yourself. You will thank us for it.
