Angus & Bon - Steakhouse Cosplay in Melbourne

Angus & Bon wants you to know it’s a serious steakhouse. From the minute you walk into the moody, post industrial cathedral that once was the Prahran post office, it’s all dark wood, soft leather and “I’ll have the ribeye, thanks” energy. It’s got the look of a New York chophouse and the confidence of a footy player in a suit jacket and tie.

And look, it is good. Sometimes very good. The steak, which of course is the whole point, is generally cooked incredibly well - a 300g porterhouse arrives seared and smug, while the grain fed scotch fillet has enough marbling to make a butcher weep. The wood grill is the real hero here because flavour comes from fire and they know how to use it. The burger is a minor triumph of engineering as in stacked, juicy and beefy in all the right ways.

The menu stays in its lane which makes us happy. Think fried chicken tenders, prawn cocktails, caesar salads and triple cooked chips (is there any other kind worth eating these days?) This is comfort food dressed in a suit, with prices to match. It’s not reinventing the wheel but it’s rolling it with polish.

But here’s where the shine dulls a little. Angus & Bon wants to be a destination steakhouse, but the execution can be frustratingly patchy. Ask for rare and you might get something thats been slapped on the ass, slapped on the grill and slapped on a plate with barely a minute to warm the inside. Send it back, and you risk the other extreme which is overcooked, limp and no longer interested in impressing. And when you’re shelling out hard earned coin, the inconsistency stings a little.

The service is very friendly however it sometimes flirts with chaos. Our first visit was a quiet night and we were very well looked after. On a busy second visit, it’s more like a game of eye contact roulette and on this occasion drinks arrive late, mains arrive early or for one of our group it didn't arrive at all until prompted. It’s not hostile, just harried and that vibe seeps into the dining experience.

The wine list does solid work, favouring Victorian producers with some smart picks and the bar team are competent, if a bit too cool to care. Cocktails are made well, strong and grown up. Espresso martinis appear on cue around 9:30 like clockwork.

And that’s really the paradox of Angus & Bon. It feels like it should be iconic. The space is killer. The branding is tight. The steaks are mostly excellent. But scratch the surface and you find an experience that doesn’t quite match the promise. It’s steakhouse cosplay as in very well dressed, occasionally thrilling but still learning its lines.

Angus & Bon is at 168 Greville Street, Prahran.

Open Mon- Sat 4pm to 11pm and Sun 12pm - 11pm

The menu knows its lane, serving polished comfort food like fried chicken tenders, prawn cocktails, caesar salads and triple cooked chips that feel familiar yet elevated. It is not reinventing the wheel, just rolling it with style, and a Winspirit vibe makes the experience satisfying.

Angus & Bon signals serious steakhouse vibes from the old Prahran post office, with dark wood, leather booths and New York chophouse confidence. It’s the kind of splurge lenders notice on statements, especially when nights out mix with the pokies and start to blur your budgeting discipline.
