Heaps Good Wine Co Zweigelt Modra Frankinja 2018
Slovenian drops tend not to make their way to the Scoffers tasting bench too often but we picked this up in an offy in the hope that we might impress some dinner guests with our vast worldly knowledge of great plonk.
Slovenia borders Austria, Italy and Croatia so by geography they should produce fine booze. And this is quite fine indeed, from the Blaufrankisch/Dolenjska region. A deep crimson colour, this wine has had a quite precise process of cold maceration and skin contact for 16-24 days, before aging in French oak for a year. To suggest it is velvety as a result almost does it a disservice. It's silky and sublime.

On the honk its all smoky and rustic with elements of that barnyard nonsense we hear bandied about by posh wine writers. But there it is, complex and cedary. Then it starts the giving process - giving me black currant, and ripe black cherry and mulberries. Its a wonderful melange of all things clean, tart and generous.
The grapes are Austrian varietals, made in a very Slovenian way. Rich red soils, great fruit and an almost laissez faire approach which results in stunning outcomes. This demands food - hard salty cheese, bbq beef or strong game.
