The Hyde, Perth. Review

Pier Street sits between the Hay Street shops and the river, and most people cross it on the way to somewhere else. Hyde has put 121 rooms on it, along with a pool, which is kind of the point. The pitch is a beach club in the middle of a city, and Perth has the weather to try it. Not sure the hotel delivers on the experience though.

Check in is simple thanks to Hannah's great work, and the promise of boho chic might mean cosy. The room, for a 5 star hotel, was too small. The rooms are meant to be full of light and tactile, which is brochure language for timber and stone. Anthology Studio did the interiors in earthy tones and custom furniture, and the mix includes 18 suites. The addition of DJ music for half the night and into the morning wasn't included in the brochure but heavy sleepers won't mind it.

Downstairs is Farra, a Greek restaurant spread across a dining room, a terrace and the pool. The bar opens onto the water, which makes an afternoon hard to end. A great menu offering Mezedes which we kept ordering, based on Land, Earth and Sea themes. By the time we finished, mains weren't required, but the significant other and I could not miss a Pork Tomahawk with perssimon htipiti, oregano, and plate of fried with oregano and fermented chili. I mean when in Rome right? Or at least Athens.
Guided yoga and a gym are there for anyone who feels the afternoon needs balancing. That was not us, fair to say. We instead walked over to Elizabeth Quay to the Oyster Bar for Coffin Bay oysters and a glass of Margaret Rover Chardonnay

One fair quibble. Valet parking is $75 a night before discounts, which seems a lot. Another is Canadian amenities in the bathroom. I cannot understand why amenities made overseas find themselves in Australian hotel rooms. I want tea tree, eucalyptus and products that smell like Australia. And now that we are talking irks, having discount offers from June - September still on the website in October/November is lazy.
Overall a reasonable experience, with two or three issues that need to be ironed out, especially that parking fee. Oh and for a five star, I want a bit more space. If you are after a week night beach club in Perth, this is the place for you. It feels like a little attempt of a Potato Head Bali kind of vibe. Not entirely sure it works.
