Our recent stay in a King Studio at Lanson Place Melbourne was exceptional and confirmed this is a true hidden gem right in the heart of the city. The 1901 Salvation Army Printing Works building has transformed into a luxury boutique hotel and while we’ve been enthusiastically recommending it to friends from out of town, it’s absolutely a must visit for locals looking for a luxury staycation that feels both indulgent and refreshing. You can afford to splurge on a weekend away in the bustling heart of the government, theatre and business end of town.

The entry is impreseive, with a 40m-long installation by local artists Jarra Karalinar Steel and Corey Thomas, one of almost 450 pieces of Australian art throughout the hotel. Our apartment was a light filled sanctuary with floor to ceiling windows offering sweeping views of the city skyline and nearby gardens. Waking up to that panorama is pure magic. The design throughout is sleek and modern, yet incredibly warm and inviting. Little touches of plants, small objects and books reminded us of our own home. The luxurious finishes, from the stone benchtops in the kitchen to the plush textures in the living area give it a high end but still comfortable feel.

One of the standout features? The super soft bedding which was genuinely hard to leave and a bathtub that redefines relaxation. It's the kind of place where you could easily spend the whole day indoors and feel like you’re miles away from the city buzz. The hotel boasts a 20-metre lap pool, spa, and gym, ensuring we could maintain our average fitness routines or at least pretend to. Buffet breakfast for guests is served in the first-floor Albert Lounge, which doubles as a co-working space after service.

This is the Hong Kong brand’s very first Australian hotel, and we understand why they chose Melbourne. A city of boutique and luxury hotels, it is a fine addition to the current offer at the eastern end of the CBD grid.

The service was flawless. Every interaction was marked by warmth and efficiency, adding a personal touch making our experience warm and very personal. Lanson Place seamlessly merges the heritage charm of the original building with the sleek sophistication of the new structure. It’s thoughtfully done, giving the property a distinct character that reflects Melbourne’s own unique blend of old and new. With the 14-storey glass tower rising behind the building's façade, it is a contemporary nod to Melbourne's storied history.

Whether you're visiting from interstate, abroad or simply craving a luxury escape in your own city, Lanson Place delivers on every front. A five-star stay that we can’t wait to repeat.

Lanson Place is at 502 Albert Street, East Melbourne, Vic.

Rooms start from around $240 per night.
