If wines were people, Harriet would be that enigmatic aunt who arrives unannounced, bearing tales of Tuscan lovers and a suitcase full of exotic spices. Crafted from Italian varietals Sangiovese, Sagrantino, and Montepulciano making their presence felt in the Australian wine market, this blend is both a little mysterious and very bold. And we are loving it.
Lets talk a little about the nose. Harriet teases with whispers of leather bound books, rose petals and a hint of toasted almond. The palate is a rollercoaster of sensation including juicy red cherries, dark plums, and a flirtatious touch of fennel. Add in some dark chocolate and liquorice notes and its a full mouth of spice and fruit. The Sagrantino lends a firm handshake of tannins, while the Montepulciano adds a more sultry depth. It's almost like a passionate debate between old friends - heated, complex but ultimately harmonious.
Aged for twelve months in French oak, Harriet has developed a sophistication to temper her adventurous spirit. Pair with a hearty beef ragout or a wild mushroom risotto and you're in for an evening of indulgence. Its the kind of wine you want to drink now the weather has turned us to dinner in the PJ's with a pair of Uggs on and the pooch in front of the fire. None of this going out to drink malarkey for us.
Angullong is a family owned wine company from the high altitude, cool climate wine region of Orange in the Central West of New South Wales. Canadian refugee Jeff Byrne makes these impeccable libations from the vineyard located on the southern lower slopes of the foothills of Mt Canobolas. It's an ancient volcano crater and the vineyards range in altitude from 620 metres down to 580 metres above sea level so the soil is rich and filled with basalt and other minerals, perfect for viticulture.
The Angullong 2022 Crossing Reserve Harriet is a bold, characterful wine refusing to be pigeonholed, but sits well in among a rack of GSM's and other red blends. It's a delightful dance of tradition and innovation and a true testament to the winemaking prowess of Byrne and the region.
